Creating Layers in Mixed Media Art - Book review

Como sabéis, colaboro de vez en cuando con la comunidad mixed media de mixedmediaart.net 
Michelle Brown, una australiana apasionada por el mixed media, ha autopublicado su primer libro de mixed media "Creating Layers in Mixed Media Art", y ha sido tan amable de enviarme un ejemplar para dar mi opinión. Muchas gracias Michelle!.

Michelle ha reunido una buena cantidad de tecnicas para aquellos que están empezando con el art journaling y mixed media.
Es una pequeña guia de 38 páginas para tener a mano en esos momentos de parón. ¿Y ahora qué?

Desde la primera capa de gesso a técnicas con collage, los artículos y los dibujos son muy sencillos y claros, por lo que aun sin entender inglés, se pueden seguir los pasos perfectamente.

Aunque puedas pensar que las técnicas son muy básicas, Michelle nos da unos cuantos trucos interesantes que pueden ser aplicados en diversidad de proyectos.

Para completar las técnicas y ver como utilizarlas en trabajos mixed media, hay un par de proyectos paso a paso. Una preciosa página de art journal y un tablero en lienzo. Y una table muy útil para cuando estamos bloqueados.

Así que, tanto si eres nuevo en el mundo mixed media y no sabes cómo empezar, o estás atascado en tu trabajo, este manual es una guía útil para comerzar. 

Como dice Michelle en su libro "echa un vistazo a los materiales y herramientas que tienes a mano, y mira qué técnicas puedes utilizar.

Aquí tenéis una página de art journal que he hecho utilizando algunas de las ideas que Michelle incluye en el libro. Espero que os guste.

Michelle has put together a bunch of techniques for those who are starting to art journaling and mixed media. 
It is a 38 pages guide to have within reach when you are asking yourself "what's next"? 


From gesso layers to collage, the articles and pictures are clear, so even if you do not understand English, you will follow the techniques perfectly. 


Although you may think that the techniques are very basic, Michelle gives interesting tips that can be applied to many projects. 


To complete the techniques, and see how to use them in mixed media artwork, there're a couple of step-by-step projects. A beautiful art journal page and a mixed media canvas board and a helpful table for those "what's next" moments.


So, if you are new to mixed media and do not know how to start, or if you get stuck in your work, this book is a helpful guide to start. As Michelle said in her book, "look at the materials and tools you have on hand and see which techniques can be used".

La foto de este mes me ha encantado. La cara de la bisabuela es un poema y no quería dejar pasar la oportunidad de hacerle una página. No sé por qué, lo primero que me ha venido a la cabeza ha sido lo del akelarre. ¿Será que la abuela me recuerda a alguna "bruja"?

This month's picture cracked me up. The great mother is soooo cute and I didn't want to miss the chance to make a page in my journal. I don't know why, but the first thing that came to my mind was a Coven (Akelarre). Maybe the granny reminds me of a "witch" I know?

Wink of Stella Brushes by Kuretake

He tenido la suerte de probar los nuevos pinceles Wink of Stella de Kuretake y aquí os dejo mis impresiones: 

Kuretake me envió 3 colores ( dorado, rosa y azul) y el transparente

I'm so glad I had the chance to test the new Wink of Stella brushes. 

I had 4 colours: Gold, Clear, Pink and Blue 

El producto es básicamente el mismo que el rotulador Wink of Stella, pero con una punta a modo de pincel. 
Es de base agua y una vez seco, permanente. 
Dispone de un depósito y una válvula que permite el flujo de la tinta a la punta del pincel. 
Antes de utilizarlo por primera vez, hay que quitar el aro negro de seguridad, volver a enroscar el depósito y apretar en el mismo para que fluya la tinta. 


They are basically the same pen as Wink of Stella, but with a brush tip. 
They are waterbased and once dry, permanent. 
They have an ink deposit and a valve which let the necessary ink flow towards the brush tip. 
You have to remove the black security ring in order to let the ink flow, and push the deposit to pump the ink. 

Estas son las primeras pruebas con papel MiTeintes de Cansos y papel de acuarela. 
¡Brillan y mucho! 
Con una sola capa, la cobertura es muy buena. El brillo se incrementa aplicando sucesivas capas. 
La punta tipo pincel permite escribir, dibujar y pintar superficies más grandes que con el rotulador wink of stella. 

These are the first tests in a MiTeintes Canson paper and watercolour paper. 
They really shine!!. 
With only a layer, the coverage is great and you can increase the sparkle with new layers. 
The brush tip allows to write, draw and paint bigger surfaces than the wink of stella pens. 

De los 4 colores que he probado, creo que el transparente es el más versátil. 
Brilla por sí mismo, pero es fantástico para añadir un toque a colores mates. 

I found the clear brush the most versatile. 
It shines on its own, but also is great for add sparkle to matte colours. 

Sobre rotulador negro “Brushable” 
Perfecto para añadir un toque en imágenes de Navidad 
Sobre números de madera 
He añadido una capa de barniz y resalta el brillo aun más. 

I tested it over black brushable pen and it worked great. 
Perfect for Christmas images 
Over wooden numbers. 
I added a layer of varnish and it makes the shine even better. 

También lo he usado en mi art journal, sobre un fondo acrílico una vez seco. 
De nuevo, el pincel transparente hace que el acrílico resalte más. 

I also used them in an art journal background over dry acrylic paint. 
Again, the clear pen makes the acrylics pop 

Este es un tag que hice utilizando los pinceles. 
Utilicé el color transparente en los bordes de los adornos y la cartulina. 
Los números de colores están pintados con el azul. El copo de nieve también. 

Here you have a tag I made using the pens. 
I applied a layer of clear pen over the edges of the embellishments and the cardstock . And used also the wooden numbers painted with blue wink of stella brush. I also painted the snowflake.

 
Realmente, estos nuevos pinceles tienen muchas posibilidades: 
Son fáciles de usar 
La tinta fluye constantemente 
Los colores son muy vivos 
Se pueden utilizar en múltiples superficies porosas 
Son permanentes una vez secos 
No se corren. 

I see many possibilities to these new pens. 
They are very easy to use. 
The ink flows constant 
The colours are so vibrant 
They can be applied to lots of porous surfaces 
They are permanent once dry 
They do not bleed 

El único punto “no tan positivo” que le veo, es que el depósito es translúcido, lo que dificulta un poco ver cuánta tinta queda. 

Aparte de eso. Si te gusta el brillo sutil, estos son tus nuevos rotuladores. 

Esta es mi opinión personal. 
El material y los datos técnicos de los rotuladores han sido facilitados por Kuretake. 
Los rotuladores están disponibles en la tienda online de Kuretake.

P.D. Si eres una de las asistentes a los talleres de Art Mesa de este año, tendrás la oportunidad de probarlos.

My only not-so-positive point is that the deposit is translucent, which difficults to see how much ink left in it. 
Other than that, if you like sparkles, these are your pens
