¿Qué es lo primero que se te viene a la cabeza al hablar de coleccionismo de arte?
¿galerías exclusivas, precios desorbitados, artistas reconoidos, inversión? ¿y placer? ¿no sería agradable coleccionar arte por el simple gusto de poder admirarlo?
Desde mi punto de vista, coleccionar arte no tiene por qué ser ni caro, ni exclusivo, ni snob.
La definición de arte, puede ser bastante subjetiva, aunque se resumiría en el conjunto de actividades u objetos creados por la mano del hombre para representar ideas, emociones o sentimientos a través de distintos recursos, ya sean plásticos, lingüísticos o sonoros.
¿Y qué nos lleva a empezar una colección de arte?
En muchos casos, comienza de una manera no premeditada. Símplemente por la necesidad -consciente o no- de tener algo creativo que nos guste.
Otras veces, es una decisión consciente, o bien, como inversión.
Hablando en primera persona, mis colecciones siempre han sido del primer tipo: "culo veo, culo quiero"
Una vez tomada la decisión, ¿cómo empezar?
1. Tómatelo como un proyecto personal que puede resultar muy gratificante, tanto a corto como a largo plazo. No tengas prisa.
2. Encuentra tu interés, tu pasión, ya sea pintura, música, fotografía...Aprende sobre ello. Las técnicas, los materiales.
En mi caso, como artista mixed media, conozco multitud de recursos online donde alegrarse la vista. Galerías online como
Invaluable, nos pueden facilitar la búsqueda.
3. Establece un presupuesto. El arte no tiene por qué ser caro. Busca artistas locales y emergentes por tu zona
4. Visita ferias locales de artesanos, exposiciones, galerías. Guíate por tu propio gusto.
5. Si ha encontrado algo de tu gusto y adaptado al presupuesto, intenta ponerte en contacto con el artista.
Por propia experiencia, estará encantado de atender a quien muestra interés por su obra.
Haz las preguntas que consideres oportunas. Si hay posibilidad de que lo que compres pueda ser parte de una serie, el artista también estará interesado en crear futuras obras. ¿Quién sabe? quizá exclusivas para tí. Y eso siempre le da un valor añadido a la obra.
6. Piensa dónde vas a colocar la pieza que compres. Mi colección de "botijos" (como la llama mi marido, aunque son distintas piezas de cerámica), está repartida por todas las estanterías de la casa. Comencé comprando uno en una feria en Santander y cada vez que salía de viaje, en cada pueblo que paraba, preguntaba por los artesanos y compraba uno. En la última mudanza, algunos se quedaron en el trastero.
Así que sí. El tamaño, a veces, importa.
7. Sobre todo, disfruta de cada pieza que compres. El coleccionismo es una inversión, sí. Sobre todo en uno mismo.

What's the first thing that comes to your mind if asked about to start a fine art collection?
Exclusive galleries, high prices, well-known artists, investment? And what about pleasure? Wouldn't be great to start an art collection just for the pure enjoyment of admiring it?
From my point of view, fine art collecting don't have to be an expensive or exclusive activity
First of all, what is it fine art?. well, art definition is a bit subjective, but it could be resume as a group of activities or objects created by men/women that represent ideas, emotions or feelings through plastic, linguistic and sound resources or mediums.
What does it make us to start an art collection?
In many cases, it starts as an unconscious way, simply led by the need of having something creative that we like.
Others, it is a conscious decision or as an investment.
From my side, my collections have always started as the first case: "I want that one"
So, once the decision is made, how do you start?
1. Take it as a personal project. It can e very gratifying, both short and long term. Do not be in a hurry.
2. Find out what are your interest, your passion: paints, drawings, music, photography, whatever. Learn as much as you can about it. The tecniques, the materials..
As a mixed media artist, I know plenty of online galleries and free resources focused on your point of interest. Sites like Invaluable, are just "candy for your eyes".
3. Set your budget and try to stick to it. Art has not to be expensive.
4. Look for local artists, go to local artisans fairs, exhibitions in your zone. Let yourself guide by your like.
5. When you finally find something you like, try to contact the artist.
As far as I know, as a mixed media artist myself, they will be glad to answer your questions, and will be glad for your expression of interest and support. Who knows, maybe the artist can create something special just for your, and that adds more value to your collection.
6. Think about the space you have to place your collection.
When I first started my pottery collectin, it was in an artisan fair in Santander, and after that one, I always bought something wherever I went. I asked for local artisans in every village I went, and my collection grew... too much I had to put away some of the pieces when we moved from our latest home.
So yes, sometimes, size maters.
But over all, enjoy it. Enjoy the way your collection grows. Enjoy every piece you buy, because yes, art collecting is an investment, but an investment in oneself
